About the Religious Studies Philosophy and Ethics Department (RSPE)
Our aim is to capture the interest of our students, as well as develop the critical and evaluative skills that help them to make sense of the world around them. We encourage students to show their understanding of Religious beliefs, teaching and practices by recognising connections between their own personal beliefs and those of a religious believer. The Religious Studies, Philosophy and Ethics department aims to foster this love of learning and intellectual curiosity through the topics that we cover and the variety of teaching and learning techniques applied in the classroom. We encourage our students to take an active part in their education and they demonstrate their understanding through a range of methods including: research projects, presentations, engaging in class debates, re-enactments and writing essays to enhance their analytical and evaluative reasoning.
At all levels in the School the department aims to foster an interest in and enjoyment of religious beliefs, teachings and practices through provision of activities beyond the classroom. We organise enrichment days which involve guest speakers, discussion activities and fieldtrips to places of religious significance. The RSPE Department is part of the Humanities Faculty and is well resourced, and has two dedicated classrooms as well as a faculty office. All rooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards. Religious Studies is a taught across all Key Stages and achieves good results in public examinations. The diversity of the subject and the topics studied results in all students finding some aspect of Religious Studies, Philosophy and Ethics deeply interesting.
